Subject Coverage and Structure

The Welsh Revised PoS 2015 Framework contains statements from the Learning Wales Programmes of Study for:

Overall Assessment Outcomes - Terminology and Thresholds*

Pupils’ scores for each subject move through 6 ‘steps’ for each year. The steps are termed beginning, beginning plus, developing, developing plus, secure and exceeding.

The pupil’s score is calculated based on their coverage of the curriculum content within each year's markbook. Details of the thresholds for these scores can be seen in the image below.

Coverage is determined by teacher assessment recorded against the hexagons in the markbook for that subject, and the respective weightings for each.

For pupils in Routes markbooks, you will see a percentage rather than a score e.g. 32% of Route A.

Markbook Terminology and Weightings*

Both the pupil and class markbooks use a traffic light system to reflect each pupil's level of achievement of each statement.

Each colour carries a different meaning and each carries a different weighting forward to the calculation of the overall assessment outcome.

The default markbook terminology and weightings for the Welsh Revised Framework 2015 are shown in the image below.

*Please note that you can customise the terminology, weightings and thresholds for your school if required. Please read these pages on customising Classroom Monitor to find out more about these options and the impact they will have.

The Calculation Explained

To calculate the overall score, Classroom Monitor checks the total number of statements within that year or phase of study, checks how many statements are set at each of the assessment judgements (hexagon colours), and then uses the respective weightings to calculate the overall percentage coverage of the content within that markbook.

Example
For ‘Using Data Skills’ in Year 5, the total number of objectives in the markbook is 7. A pupil has:

  • 1 blue ‘exceeding’ hexagon judgements weighted 1,
  • 2 green ‘met’ hexagon judgements weighted 0.9
  • 2 yellow ‘almost’ hexagon judgements weighted 0.5
  • 1 red ‘target’ hexagon judgement weighted 0, and 1 unassessed

The Calculation

(1 x 1) + (2 x 0.9) + (2 x 0.5) / 7 = 0.543 = 54.3% coverage

Based on the threshold percentages, this pupil is at 5 Dev

Extra Information

Resources can be added against any statement by clicking on the plus symbol next to each statement. You can add your own web-links, worksheets or lesson plans to build up a repository of teaching and learning resources to support teachers in your school.

If you do add your own, the plus symbol will be replaced by a gold star.
