You must be logged in as a teacher/SLT member to write reports in Classroom Monitor.

If your school subscribes to the 'Assessment Markbooks' module, then you can add statements to you reports based on your markbook assessments. This creates a individualised, accurate starting point for building your comments on a subject. Before starting to add statements to reports, you must select your current
written report settings.

Adding Statements

From the Class Markbook, you can add statements into a pupil's report by right-clicking on any of the hexagons. This will select a pupil (above) and an objective (to the left). What is added to the report may vary depending on how the hexagon is coloured. Click ‘Add to Report’ to add the selected objective to the selected pupil’s report.

You will need to select the reporting session that you want to add the comment to. The one that you have currently selected will be shown at the top (e.g. Summer 2016 here) whilst any other active reporting sessions will be shown underneath (e.g. Autumn 2015).

Statements can also be added from the Pupil Markbook if you prefer. You should follow the same process- right clicking on the relevant boxes to add the statements that you want.

The pupil's name and relevant gender words will be added into the comment as appropriate. For most curriculums, Classroom Monitor will also change the language used for the comment depending on how it is currently assessed for that pupil in the markbook:

  • Green/blue: adds the statement to the main comment box with language indicating that the pupil has met this objective e.g. Grace can...
  • Yellow: adds the statement to the main comment box with language indicating that the pupil is making some progress towards this objective e.g. Grace is starting to...
  • Red: adds the statement to the target box with language indicating that the pupil needs to work on this objective e.g. Grace needs to be able to...
  • White: adds the statement to the main comment box with generic language e.g. Measure the perimeter... When adding an unassessed statement, Classroom Monitor will show a pop up box for you to indicate that you want to do this

There are a number of ways that you can add multiple statements to reports rather than adding each one individually. You may be familiar with some of these techniques for speeding up assessment and you can find out more about them in the linked help pages:

Once you have selected multiple hexagons/boxes and they have gone grey, you can add them all to the report using the right click menu which as described above.

Keeping track of statements added

When you have added a statement, you will see a notebook and pen icon appear on the hexagon/box to let you know that this statement has been added to the report (circled in red in this image) to help you to avoid duplicating comments. This will be shown wherever a comment has been added for the current academic year, even if this was in a previous reporting session. You will also see a different coloured icon if it has been added to a report in a previous academic year.

If you want to remove a report icon from your markbook, you can simply right click and select 'Remove Report Icon'. This will remove the icon from the markbook but it will not remove the comment from the report. If you choose to remove report icons, you should be careful to avoid duplicating comments.

Editing added statements

You can view the statements that have been added to a pupil's report for a particular subject directly from the markbook by clicking on the relevant report icon which you can see circled in this picture. It appears under the subject headings in the pupil markbook, or under each pupil's name in the class markbook. This will take you to the Report Editor for the selected subject for the selected pupil.

Once in the report editor you can treat the comments as text which can be edited, deleted and added to as you wish. You should expect to edit the statements that are sent through from the markbooks. Although they have been personalised with the pupil's name and gender and may reflect the assessment made, they will be inserted as separate sentences rather than a fluid comment. We would suggest that you should think of these as statements as providing a good starting point for writing your comments rather than as completed comments.

When accessing the report editor from the markbook, things generally work in the same as when accessing the report editor from the write reports screen. There are, however, two key differences - it is not possible to change subjects from this page and it is also not possible to preview a report in your school's report template.
