This page will give you an overview of the markbook's functionality. Click the blue links for more detailed help and guidance.

Loading a Markbook

On the homepage, you will need to click the link above the coloured hexagons to access the new markbook.

NB The Class and Pupil Markbooks are still accessible via the Assessment Markbooks hexagon at the moment. You can enter and view data via any version of the markbook.

Clicking the link will take you to the markbook screen with the markbook menu sidebar opened ready for you to make your selections and load a markbook.

  1. Group: Click to select one or more groups to view in the markbook
  2. Curriculum: Select the assessment framework that you want to view subjects from
  3. Subject: Click to select one or more subjects to view in the markbook
  4. Ability: Select one or more ability levels that you want to view (if you don't make this selection, you will be shown all ability levels for the selected subject(s))
  5. Strands: Select one or more strands to view in the markbook. (if you don't make this selection, you will be shown all strands for the selected subject(s))
  6. Show ordering options: if you would like to reorder the way that your pupils and/or objectives appear in the markbook. The default order is pupils order by first name and objectives ordered by lowest to highest ability level that they belong to.

Then, click the green 'Load Markbook' button.

NB The markbook allows you to load lots of pupils and objectives into the markbook at once. However, we would always recommend loading a focused markbook, containing only the pupils and objectives that you need at this particular point in time.

When you next come to load a markbook, these selections will be saved. This means that you can load exactly the same markbook again or add or remove selections (by clicking crosses).

The Markbook

Your markbook will load objectives down the left and pupils across the top. NB if your selections result in more than 25 objectives, you will need to press the 'Load Additional objectives' button when you get to the bottom.

Selecting tiles: Each pupil has a tile for each objective. Tiles can be selected by clicking them. To select multiple tiles you can:

  • click more than one tile to add it to your selection before choosing an action
  • click on an objective to select tiles for that objective for all of the displayed pupils
  • click on a pupil to select tiles for that pupil for all of the displayed objectives

A red box will appear around tiles that you have selected. To clear a selection, you can use the 'Clear Selections' button in the top left.

Markbook modes: The actions that you can apply to selected tiles depends on the mode that you are in. There are 3 markbook modes:

  • Assessment: For recording and viewing assessment
  • Evidence: For recording and viewing evidence
  • Reporting: For reporting using assessments in the markbook

Select the mode that you require using the buttons in the control bar at the top.

Assessment Mode

Recording assessment judgements: The assessment status for each tile is shown by its colour and these colours are the same as in the previous version of the markbook. There are two ways of changing the colour of a tile:

  • Select and colour: Select the tile(s) that you want to change, select required colour from the palette in the top left hand corner to make the change.
  • Paint with colour: To switch 'paint' on, click the paintbrush in the top left hand corner, followed by the colour that you want to use. Then click on the tile or tiles that you want to change to that colour (you can 'drag' the colour across a number of tiles by holding down the left mouse button). You can put a new colour on your brush by clicking in the palette and paint can be switched off by clicking on the paintbrush again.

Saving assessment judgements: The colour of tiles are saved automatically as they are changed, you will see 'Save successful' flash in the markbook control bar.

Saving scores: Every few minutes, scores will be updated automatically based on the current assessment in the markbook for each subject. This means that there is no longer a need to save scores. For app users, this will mean that you no longer need to manually save your scores in the browser. Scores don't appear in the markbook and should be viewed within
Pupil tracking.

NB Scores are only updated for pupils who are set to 'Automatic' scoring. If a pupil has a 'manual' score saved currently this will not change. Currently, you will need to access the
adjust scores screen in the previous version of the markbook in order to change a pupil back to automatic scoring when required.

Assessment guidance: If guidance is available in the framework you are using, you can view this by hovering your cursor over an objective. NB Any attached resources are not currently available in this version of the markbook, but you can still access these by loading the old version of the markbook.

Evidence mode

When you go into 'Evidence mode', the current assessment colour for each tile is shown. There will also be either the words ' No evidence' or a number indicating the number of pieces of evidence attached to that tile.

Adding evidence: To add evidence, you need to click on one or more tiles and then press the 'Add' button in the top left.

In the Add Evidence window, you will see the pupil(s) and objective(s) that the evidence is being added for. To change these you need to return to the markbook.
From this window you can:
  • Type a note in the 'Notes' box
  • Change 'Evidence Type'
  • Change 'Recorded Date'
  • Upload a single file by dragging and dropping into the upload box or using the 'Select a file' button (the filename will appear at the top of the box to show it has been selected)
You must press the green 'Save Evidence' button to save the evidence.

Viewing evidence: To view evidence, you need to click on a tile and then press the 'View' button in the top left. This will take you to a screen where you can view the evidence. When you click on a piece of evidence in the list you will see a preview. The evidence can be removed or downloaded by clicking the relevant buttons.

Reporting mode

When you go into 'Reporting mode', the current assessment colour for each tile is shown.

To send a comment from an assessment tile through to a report: Select the reporting session that you want to add comments to from the dropdown in the top left. Select the tile(s) and press the 'Set' button to send comments to the report.

Editing report comments: To view or edit the text of a report, you will need to access the report editor.
